What is the age limit to stay in youth hostels ?

Youth hostels, with their affordable yet quality accommodations, attract many travellers. However, is there an age limit for staying in a youth hostel ?

Can an underage person stay alone in a youth hostel ?

Minors travelling with their family or a school group are more than welcome in Youth Hostels. So, what happens when an unaccompanied minor wants to book a bed in a dormitory and stay in a hostel without an adult? Unaccompanied minors are generally not accepted in youth hostels. Nevertheless, some establishments may allow unaccompanied minors between the ages of 16 and 18 to stay alone in their Youth Hostel provided they have a parental permission along with a copy of the legal guardian’s valid ID or passport. An exception can be made to these restrictions when the unaccompanied minor is emancipated. Indeed, emancipation releases the minor from the authority of their parents or legal guardian, and gives them the right to accomplish acts requiring legal majority alone. For emancipated young adults, travelling alone and staying in a hostel is therefore allowed without the authorization of their parents or legal guardian. However, if you have any doubts, we recommend that you inquire directly with the hostel where you plan to stay by phone or by finding the necessary information directly on their website.

Are children allowed in youth hostels ?

Some hostels may impose an age limit for staying in their establishment and thus not admit children below a certain age. As Youth Hostels mainly offer dorm accommodations, these rooms may not be suitable for families travelling with young children. However, solutions exist to allow you to stay with your family in a hostel. You can privatise a dormitory for your entire family or book a private double room, which is nowadays being offered in many hostels.

Is there a maximum age to sleep in a youth hostel ?

Since a minimum age may be required in some hostels, the matter of a maximum age may arise. Although in most people’s minds, Youth Hostels are connected with young travellers, there is no maximum age for staying in a Youth HostelYouth Hostels are open to all travellers of all travelers, from students to retirees by way of families with children, who wish to experience a social adventure.
